This fine, listed property in Knightsbridge belonged to American clients who wished to extend both upwards and down into the basement. As a listed property, rich in period features, planning permission was always going to be difficult to obtain. The basement, in particular, was a sticking point with planners opposed from the outset.
We set about managing our clients’ expectations while developing a viable planning application. With this pending, we completed design work for the whole property, retaining and accommodating the myriad original features. By the time approval came through, following a successful appeal and including agreement to the basement, we were ready to start. We worked closely with Philip Vergeylen and Nicholas Haslam on interior design that included complex bathroom layouts using superb marble and requiring the highest quality workmanship. The result is a magnificently extended house, true to its heritage while also rich in fabulous contemporary detail.
