Chelsea Apartment / maisonette renovation

  • chelsea renovation, residential architect, vogue, gq, house and garden, evening standard property porn

The owners of this derelict three-storey maisonette above a working shop on Chelsea’s Kings Road wanted to create an attractive family home for rental – aimed at corporate high-flyers. With a beautiful view overlooking a private square, this apartment already had a certain grandeur and the footprint offered a lot of potential. A maze of small rooms, narrow corridors and up-and-down floor levels presented an interesting challenge for our talented architectural and interior design team.

An improved flow was achieved by creating new floors, being bought together by a beautiful staircase built to match the original Victorian one, with a continuous mahogany handrail from top to bottom. On the first floor, a mixture of folding and sliding doors meant dining and entertaining spaces could be opened up or closed off as required. Above, the generous new master suite opens on to a large roof terrace, where large glass skylights provide natural daylight to the stunning kitchen and dining room below. A further two en-suite bedrooms on the top floor are equally spacious and individual. All windows have secondary glazing and ‘quiet glass’, producing rooms of such restful silence that almost all visitors comment that you would never feel you were living above one of London’s busiest and most iconic shopping streets.
